Common failure modes:
Token drift. A designer updates the primary blue from #2563EB to #1D4FD8 in Figma. Engineering doesn’t notice for two sprints. Meanwhile, three new features ship using the old blue. Now there are two primary blues in production.
Phantom components. A designer creates a new card variant for a feature. It ships in the product but never gets added to the official component library in Figma. Six months later, someone builds a similar card from scratch because the first one isn’t discoverable.
Naming inconsistency. The Figma file names a spacing token “spacing-md” while the codebase calls it “space-4” or “—spacing-medium”. Both map to 16px, but nobody realizes they’re the same token because the names don’t match.
Undocumented overrides. A component instance in Figma uses custom padding that differs from the base component. It works in the design, but when a developer inspects the base component for specs, they implement the wrong values.

That report goes into the team’s Monday planning doc. Designers see what needs cleanup. Developers see what changed and what they need to update in code. The token drift section alone has prevented three production inconsistencies since Marcus started running it.
Building the Audit Incrementally
You don’t need to start with a comprehensive audit. Begin with one check and add more as you learn what breaks most often in your system.

Multi-File Token Extraction and Comparison
Most design systems aren’t one file. There’s the main component library, a separate file for icons, maybe a file for marketing templates, and often per-product files that reference the shared library. Keeping tokens consistent across all of them is a coordination problem that grows with every new file.

Ask for SCSS variables and you get $color-primary-500: #2563EB;. Ask for JSON and you get a nested object. Ask for Swift UIColor declarations and the agent will format those too. The design data is the same. The output format adapts to your stack.
Automated Design Review Workflows
Code reviews are standard practice. Design reviews are usually meetings where people squint at screens and say “looks good” or “can you make it pop more?” The mismatch exists because code has diffs — clear, line-by-line changes that reviewers can examine. Designs don’t have an equivalent unless someone manually documents what changed.
The openclaw figma skill can generate design diffs. Not visual pixel comparisons (those require rendering), but structural diffs: what components changed, what properties shifted, what tokens were added or removed.

The structural diff gives reviewers something concrete to evaluate. Instead of “the dashboard looks different,” they see exactly what changed. Developers reading the review know what they’ll need to implement before writing a single line of code.
Checking Designs Against the Component Library
Another review workflow: verifying that a new design uses components from the shared library rather than custom one-offs.
Check the Checkout Flow page in [URL]. For every element on the page, tell me:
- Whether it's an instance of a component from our Design System Library
- If it's a detached instance or local component
- If it uses any custom overrides that differ from the library default
This catches a common anti-pattern: designers detaching component instances to make quick modifications, which breaks the connection to the library and creates maintenance debt. The agent flags every detached instance, every local component that should be a library reference, and every override that might indicate the library component needs a new variant rather than a one-off customization.
Keeping Design and Code in Sync Across Teams
Token sync is the perennial problem. The Figma file is the design source of truth. The codebase is the implementation source of truth. Keeping them aligned requires either a manual process or automated tooling.

The Weekly Sync Check

Pairing With Version Control
If your team stores design tokens in a Git repository, the workflow extends further. Extract tokens from Figma, format them, and compare against the latest main branch. If there are differences, use the output to create a pull request.

Component Inventory and Coverage Analysis
Design systems are never done. Components get added, deprecated, and sometimes forgotten. Knowing what your library contains — and what’s missing — requires periodic inventory.
List every component in the Design System Library file. For each component, show:
- Name
- Number of variants
- List of variant properties and their options
- Whether it has a description set
The agent returns a full component inventory. The team uses this to spot gaps: components that exist in production but aren’t in the library, components in the library that nobody uses, and components with incomplete variant sets.
Identifying Missing Descriptions
Figma components support descriptions — text that appears when someone hovers over the component in the assets panel. Well-described components are easier to discover and use correctly. Under-described components lead to misuse.
Find all components in the Design System Library that have an empty description field. List them by page.
This returns a cleanup list. Assign the list to designers as a documentation task. Over a few sprints, the component library goes from “a collection of things” to a self-documenting system where every component explains its purpose and usage.
Cross-referencing Usage
A more advanced workflow: compare the components in your library against what’s actually used in product files.
List all components from the Design System Library that are NOT used as instances anywhere in these product files:

This identifies dead components — library members that no product file references. Some might be deprecated. Others might be newly added but not yet adopted. Either way, the inventory helps the team make decisions about what to maintain and what to prune.
Practical Patterns for Design System Teams
After running these workflows for several months, Marcus’s team settled on a rhythm.
Monday morning audit. The weekly design system audit runs before planning. The report surfaces anything that changed over the weekend or during the previous week’s sprint. Designers address naming issues and token drift during the sprint. Developers update code tokens in a batch PR.
Per-feature design review. Every new feature design gets a structural diff before the design review meeting. Reviewers read the diff alongside the visual mockups. The meeting is shorter because everyone arrives knowing what changed, not just what it looks like.
Pre-release token sync. Before every release, the team runs the token comparison workflow. If the Figma tokens and code tokens match, the release proceeds. If they don’t, the mismatch gets fixed before shipping. This has prevented four token-related production bugs in the last quarter.
Monthly component inventory. Once a month, the team runs the full component inventory and coverage analysis. They identify unused components, missing documentation, and naming inconsistencies. The cleanup tasks get added to the next sprint.

Limitations to Know
The openclaw figma skill reads design data. It has boundaries that matter for these advanced workflows.
File size affects performance. Large Figma files with thousands of components take longer to analyze. If your design system file is massive, break audit requests into per-page queries rather than whole-file scans.
Nested overrides can be ambiguous. Deeply nested component instances with multiple overrides sometimes report base component values rather than override values. For critical token audits, verify overrides on complex components manually.
No visual diffing. The skill produces structural diffs — property changes, component additions, value modifications. It cannot generate visual screenshots or pixel-level comparisons. For visual regression detection, pair it with a screenshot comparison tool.
Branch files need separate URLs. Figma’s branching feature creates separate file URLs for branches. You need to provide both the main and branch URLs explicitly for comparison workflows.
API rate limits apply. Large audits across multiple files consume more API calls. The Figma API has rate limits that the skill respects, but running five comprehensive audits simultaneously may trigger throttling. Space large operations out.
Getting Started With Advanced Workflows
